Location and General Characteristics

Located 35 miles southwest of Chicago, Plainfield Township is one of the fastest growing areas in the state. The Village of Plainfield, incorporated within the Township, is Will County's oldest community. With its proximity to highways, airports and train stations, Plainfield is a popular choice for young families who commute to work in the metro area. Residents have easy access to Interstates 55, 80, 88 and 355; state highways 59 and 126; and U.S. Route 30. The community -- including its historic downtown district -- continues to build toward the future while honoring its past. Several of the city's buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, while new businesses and residences are woven into the existing fabric of the community.


The Township offers residents excellent quality of life with good schools, a low crime rate, plenty of cultural and recreational opportunities and a low cost of living. This thriving, yet still quaint, "prairie" town is a focal point of exciting growth and development. The Village of Plainfield has a population of more than 20,673 while the total population of the Township exceeds 50,000. The Village Government is well positioned to accommodate growth and welcomes new commercial and industrial development to help parallel the success of its residential expansion. A stroll through town quickly provides even the most casual observer with evidence of Plainfield's developmental renaissance.

To the north is Naperville, which as become the premier research center of the Midwest with research centers, corporate headquarters and high technology businesses being developed along the East-West Tollway corridor.  Naperville is the home of various nationally recognized firms.  Some of the largest employers include Bell Labs, Amoco Oil Company, Nalco Chemical Company, Nabisco, Northern Illinois Gas Company, Dow Jones & Co., General Motors and Hewlett Packard.  Extensive office building development has been occurring along the East-West Tollway and along Route 59 near the Fox Valley regional shopping mall.  There are several well-planned industrial parks in the city as well as the Burlington Northern automobile-receiving depot.  Chrysler Corporation has recently relocated a parts facility in the Oak Grove Center for Commerce in the western part of town.  The new home office of Crate and Barrel, a prominent specialty retailer of housewares.


Transportation

Interstate 55 bisects Joliet and Plainfield, and gives the area access to the Chicago metropolitan area expressway system.  An interchange with this expressway is located at Route 30, and is approximately one mile east of the subject property.  Chicago is approximately 37 miles east, Midway Airport is estimated to be 34 miles east and O'Hare Airport is 38 miles to the northeast.  Access to most destinations in the Chicago metropolitan area can be made via northbound Interstate 55.  This thoroughfare intersects with Interstate 80 approximately six miles to the south, giving commuters easy passage to interstate travel.

Route 30 runs through Plainfield and is one of Plainfield's main arterial streets.  Route 30 runs west through Aurora and east to the Illinois-Indiana border.  Route 59 is the main north-south arterial street serving the subject's area, extending north as far as Barrington and south approximately six miles to another interchange with Interstate 55.

Passenger railway stations are available in Naperville, Joliet and Lockport and give commuters access to downtown Chicago and other southwestern suburbs.  The Amtrak system also has stations in Naperville and Joliet.
Community Facilities/Village Services

The subject area is served by Plainfield school district number 202.  The district has higher than the norm expenditures per student and low class sizes. St. Mary's Catholic School also offers parochial education from kindergarten through eighth grade.

The area has a public library operated by the Plainfield Public Library System.  The Plainfield Township Park District oversees a number of public recreation facilities in the area.  St. Joseph Hospital is approximately three miles to the southeast in Joliet; Edward Hospital in Naperville is ten miles north.  Copley Memorial Hospital in Aurora provides the latest in medical care for area residents.

Plainfield provides full-time police and fire protection.  Municipal well water and sewer service is also furnished.  A private scavenger service handles trash collection.

The village is a family and business community, with a wholesome character and growing population.  Future prospects are favorable.


Shopping, Recreation and Entertainment

The Village has a central business district with many small shops, boutiques and restaurants.  There are several strip malls with a variety of shops and services, in the outlying areas.  Plainfield is located half way between Louis Joliet Mall to the southeast and Fox Valley Mall to the north.
